Wilderness Search — This is an RT pilot course taught by Cleveland Community College. The course trains personnel on methods and procedures to be used in a remote wilderness rescue operation. HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION/2008 — This course is centered on a unique collection of Cargo Tank Models, and Props combined with a multi-media presentation to facilitate a state-of-the art training experience over a 12-hour course. The models include an MC 306; DOT 406; MC 307; DOT 407; MC 312; DOT 412; and an MC 331. These models can demonstrate the various methods of response and reinforce concepts taught at both the Operations and Technician level. A student manual will also be provided for each student. Educational Methodology Course for Fire, Rescue and EMS/2008 (66 Hours) — This course is designed to train fire & emergency instructor candidates in learning and practicing the art of: (1) developing instructional strategies/techniques: (2) and demonstrating practical generic teaching and communication skills. Participants will prepare and deliver lesson presentations on a non-EMS or Fire related topic and a topic specific to the content area in which he or she will be teaching. The focus will be on responding to learner needs while meeting ethical/professional/safety standards and legal responsibilities. To pre-register, please call Carolyn Lovelace at 704-484-6657.

B.A.T. (Big Awkward Trailers) “Pilot Course” — This is a pilot course held by OSFM and CCC BETC. There will be three (3) classes; please see below for class schedules. Students must finish all 12 hours to be certified. There will only be five (5) spaces available for each class. Please contact Carolyn Lovelace at 704-484-6657 for details and to pre-register. The classes will be held at Shelby Fire Department, Station 1. Please see next page for schedule.

Agricultural Rescue RT Pilot Program — The course will detail methods and techniques used in rescue of victims who have been injured or trapped while using various agricultural machinery. Emergency Boat Operations for Fire, Rescue and Law Enforcement Departments — This course is designed to assist Fire, Rescue and Law Enforcement Agencies with qualification and certification under NFPA 1006—Rescue Technician Professional Qualifications. This course is to boats what Emergency Vehicle Driver is to apparatus. Students will spend 10-20% of their time in the classroom and 80-90% of their time on the water learning the proper operation of their craft. Topics covered include NC Boating Laws; navigation; trailering; inspections; launch and recovery; boat operations in various environments including static water and inland flooding; man overboard; self-rescue; and waterborne search operations. Emergency Boat Operations for Fire, Rescue and Law Enforcement Departments Advanced Night Operations — This course is a continuation of the Emergency Boat Operations for Fire, Rescue and Law Enforcement taking the skills into a night-time environment. This course will focus on safety and efficiently completing the tasks from the previous classes with focus on night-time navigation; rules of the road; boat operations; coxswain and crewman duties; and search and rescue operations. Surface Water Rescue Technician Course — This course is designed to fulfill the elements of the NFPA 1006 (Rescue Technician Professional Qualifications / Surface Water Rescue Standard). The course will cover the five aquatic environments that are most commonly faced in the state of NC including surf and tidal waters; floodwaters; swiftwaters; still or standing waters; and ice. The course will consist of both classroom and hands-on practical skills applications. The course consists of lectures; swim test; pool, lake, and river work; highlines; review and testing.

Structural Collapse Instructor Qualification Course (For Instructors Only) —Classes will begin the first day at 9:00 am. Beginning and ending dates will then be determined by the accomplishments of the day and evening sessions. Please note that there will be night-time exercises. Students will be required to take the Structural Collapse Job Knowledge Exam the first day at 9:00 am. Should a student fail the exam, they will NOT be allowed to participate in the class. Students must have the following to be accepted into the class:

     NC General Level 2 Instructor Certification

     RT Certification

     RT Ropes Certification

And one of the following:

1.     Successful completion of the FEMA / U S & R Structural Collapse Technician Train the Trainer Course

2.    Completion of the Texas A & M University, Texas Fire Training School, Structural Collapse / Heavy Rescue School — Must have had the course prior to December 31, 2005

3.    NASA Ames Research Center Urban Search and Rescue Training Program, Collapsed Structure Rescue — Must have had the course prior to December 31, 2005

4.    FEMA U S & R / NFPA 1006 Structural Collapse Technician — Must have had the course prior to December 31, 2005

5.    NC Fire and Rescue Commission Rescue Technician Structural Collapse certification — Must have had the course prior to December 31, 2005.
